DOG EEG BRAIN ART
"Based on the materials presented at the recent CICA Museum, I have recently created visual representations using dog brainwaves. I imagine that one day, dogs and their owners may be able to communicate. At Hodoolab, where we explore audiovisual expressions through dog brainwaves, we look forward to your collaboration or suggestions. Thank you."
Brainwave Digital Art?
I will explore whether the next level of communication art is possible through experiments with intangible concepts like thought, self, and the unconscious. In this world, there are many people—those who are unable to express themselves, those who cannot communicate because of it, and those who struggle with communication.
Both mentally and physically, each person possesses their own unique inner mind and identity, which can be considered a work of art in itself. We can all be artists or spectators. We all have the ability to experience, empathize, and communicate through the world of art.
Artist Hodoo and Seoul Design Foundation present the exhibition "AI Fusion: The Next Epoch of Humanity" at DDP Gallery Moon in Dongdaemun Design Plaza from August 1 to September 18. Hodoo is a pioneer of "brain art", the fusion of artificial intelligence (AI) and brainwave technology in the creation of his artworks. The rapid advancement of AI is so significant that it has been dubbed the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It has brought about significant technological changes in contemporary human life. Such changes have historically had an impact on art, with the emergence of new artistic movements and trends. In the early twentieth century, the development of weapons of mass destruction and the world wars that followed led to nihilism and Dadaism began to emerge. Similarly, Pop Art was ushered in by the growth of mass media in the 1960s. Hodoo was born in the 1990s. He witnessed the technological advances of the second, third and fourth industrial revolutions. The advent of AI, which has provided the impetus for his exploration of Brain Art, has profoundly influenced his deep investigations into human thought, life and death. He bases his art on 'human thinking' and the 'biological point of view', which sees brain waves as the basic driving force behind human emotions and behaviour. He used innovative AI algorithms to digitise these brainwaves and incorporate them into his artistic storytelling. This method is central to his artistic philosophy. It enables the visual representation of brainwaves. Hodoo's technique goes beyond the simple combination of technology and art; it challenges and redefines the boundaries between the human and the machine, opening up new forms of existence that have a profound artistic and humanistic significance. This exhibition demonstrates how individual experiences and memories, closely integrated with AI, can create new forms of art. While Brain Art is still an emerging technology, Hodoo aims to resonate universally through themes such as the permanence of memory and the essence of life, offering insights into the new era humanity is entering and prompting a reassessment of human existence and value. This creative endeavor is not just an exploration of new artistic forms but also a philosophical inquiry into the essence of being, challenging us to rethink the relationship between our biological selves and the burgeoning realm of artificial intelligence. This fusion not only integrates technology with creativity, but also prompts a re-evaluation of the interface between humanity and artificial intelligence. It opens up new realms of artistic exploration and existential inquiry.

A new way of conversation by Leewan x Hodoo
A New Way of Conversation - Interaction Experiment No.1 Using Audiovisually Translated Brainwaves
For centuries, humans have expressed their mental and emotional states through art. The ability to depict how humans perceive the world has always been fascinating. With the advent of technology, humans have distanced themselves from nature, controlling it and producing information on a large scale. As humanity reflects on environmental destruction and envisions a sustainable future, the challenge has shifted to understanding the mind and spirit as material and waveforms, seeing them as aspects to overcome. Research into brainwaves suggests the possibility of communication without sensory organs, leading to the exciting potential of mental expansion beyond the physical body. In this experiment, brainwaves are collected, converted into digital signals, and used to control images, sounds, and lighting, representing the mind’s journey beyond the body. This is the first sculpture created, inspired by the living geometric framework and structure of crustaceans. Convincing a family member to collaborate on the product planning became the foundation for future Brain Art works that could soon be exhibited as the next generation of artwork.
The Origin of meaning by Hodoo
We are deeply exploring not only characters and stories but also emotions, artistic values, and the potential of AI. While this is a challenging and time-consuming process, I believe it will offer new insights into human inner workings and AI's potential. In the creative process, I actively use new technologies and programs, continuously striving for self-improvement.
This exhibition addresses philosophical questions about the difference and value of emotions between emotionless robots and emotional humans. It highlights the importance of human emotions and artistic values while encouraging reflection on the differences between AI and humans.
Developed in collaboration with UNIST, the exhibition showcases works created using emotion simulation techniques and brainwaves, exploring how well AI can interpret human emotions. Titled "The Origin of Meaning," I hope you enjoy the experience.

《LENA Ⅱ》 If there are contemporary gaps between the past and the past, what is the relationship between me and myself in the world? I really wanted to reunite with my grandfather who lived in the past and ask some questions. But I remember shouting "I love you" in the ear of my grandfather, who died after not seeing him for two years. I created the above work by imagining that I could go back to the past me and the situation around me even for a minute or 30 seconds. I put the materials of brain waves and AI in the Lena prototype that my grandfather personally experienced and touched. Isn't it possible to travel in time and space with the two elements? So, I built the concept as artificial time with my imagination. With eight cell movements, the people and spaces on the eight monitors are different, but they work similarly. I tried to imagine that humans may live within the frame of artificial time that transcends time and space, and contemporary access is possible.
OPENBLUE
The soundtrack is created by measuring brainwave signals generated in the brain using specialized equipment. These brainwave signals are converted into sound, resulting in a unique and innovative way of producing music.
The brainwaves used are connected to various mental states such as relaxation, focus, and creativity. This means that the soundtrack possesses a distinct quality and feel, designed to evoke specific emotions or mental states.
Depending on the intended purpose of the music, our soundtrack may feature slow and dreamy sounds for relaxation or more energetic elements to stimulate creativity.
Overall, brainwave-based soundtracks provide a new and exciting listening experience for those interested in the intersection of music and neuroscience.
This artwork centers around the deep blue of the ocean, attempting to express the precious emotions hidden deep within our brains. It seeks to connect with the mysterious world surrounding the process of birth and death and visually depict the special phenomena that occur in the brain after death. Resembling the movement of three-dimensional particles, it allows us to recognize the complex and mysterious world of the brain. The music used in this piece was selected using artificial intelligence, reflecting the latest technology trends.
The setting of this artwork imagines a future 100 to 200 years from now, telling the story of scientists who view death as a new beginning. It encourages reflection on the meaning of life and death through modern technology and science, while deepening our understanding of the relationship between the universe and humanity, inspired by the words of Stephen Hawking.

Hodoo's Blue is a journey accompanied by waves of emotions born from the shadow of death. The death of a friend opened his eyes to a new perspective on the world. By blending the understanding of death and birth with the unknown, the artwork portrays the profound journey that each soul undertakes. Through the depiction of the brain's unknown depths and the special phenomena that occur after death, the artist captures the complex emotions we feel as we connect this world to the one beyond.
In the artwork, the brain is not merely a biological organ but a key that unlocks the advancement of art and imagination. The artistic development of brainwaves inspires us to imagine how future technology might influence our lives. The artist believes that art, when intertwined with technology, can create deeper meaning.
The exploration of identity—'I'—invites viewers to delve into the artist’s inner world, raising questions about how we understand and penetrate the depths of the self. Beyond death, the artist conveys hope through stories and messages, suggesting that our spirit can be eternally communicated. This is not the end, but the beginning of a continuing story.
As viewers reflect on their own sense of self, imagining the future can inspire and breathe new life into our own existence. In the final moments of Open Blue, the artist extends an invitation for us to envision the future possibilities that exist within our own inner selves. This piece demonstrates the true power of art, which goes beyond mere observation to stimulate our imagination.
